Rahul Kumar PhD

From a Village in Bihar to a PhD in Canada

Energy Materials Scientist · Electrochemist · Research Mentor · Career Counselor for Scientists

I was born in a small village in Bihar, India, where access to career guidance and mentorship was almost non-existent. My story is one of relentless persistence — studying 18 hours a day, overcoming funding challenges, near-misses with scholarships, and building a research career from scratch without any roadmap.

Today, I use every lesson from that journey to help students avoid the confusion I faced, and reach their goals faster and with greater clarity.

🎓 BS-MS Dual Degree, Chemistry — IISER Kolkata 🔬 PhD, Chemistry — Queen's University, Canada 🏅 DST–INSPIRE Fellow 🏆 Frank Maine Innovation Fellow 📜 International Award for Academic Excellence 🌏 NTU–India Connect Fellow 🥈 2nd Best Master's Thesis Award 📄 Multiple Peer-Reviewed Publications
Step 1 · Early Years · Bihar, India
Growing Up Without a Roadmap
Rahul was born in a small village in Bihar, India — a place where access to career guidance, mentorship, or any structured path to a science career simply did not exist. Every year brought new exams, new academic pressure, and new challenges. But there was no one to explain what any of it led to, or how to plan ahead. Every milestone had to be figured out through trial, failure, and sheer persistence.
Step 2 · Grade 11–12
Discovering IIT-JEE Late — and Deciding to Fight Anyway
In Grade 11, Rahul first learned about the IIT-JEE examination — one of the most competitive entrance exams in the world. By that time, most serious aspirants had already been preparing for years. He was late to start, had to convince his parents, and enrolled in coaching while simultaneously managing school exams. His first attempt fell short of the cutoff. Without enough money to continue coaching, he made a decision that would define his character: he prepared entirely on his own. He locked himself in a room and studied nearly 18 hours a day for an entire year. No festivals. No holidays. No celebrations. Only determination. In his second attempt, he successfully cleared IIT-JEE Advanced.
✅ Cleared IIT-JEE Advanced — self-taught, second attempt
Step 3 · Undergraduate · IISER Kolkata
BS-MS Dual Degree in Chemistry — Surrounded by the Best
Rahul joined the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata for a BS-MS Dual Degree in Chemistry. He found himself surrounded by board toppers and top-ranked students from across India — some of the sharpest young minds in the country. It was a humbling, challenging experience. He had to completely reinvent his approach to learning: moving from the multiple-choice exam format he had mastered for IIT-JEE to writing deep, conceptual, open-ended answers required by a research-oriented curriculum. The adjustment was steep, but it built the intellectual foundation for everything that followed.
Step 4 · Summer Research · IISc Bangalore
First Research Internship — and an Invitation Back
During his undergraduate years, Rahul recognized early that research experience and internships would matter for his future. He applied widely and secured his first summer research internship at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore — one of India's most prestigious research institutions. His performance was strong enough that his supervisor personally invited him back for a second internship the following year. Being invited back twice to the same elite institution as an undergraduate was a rare distinction, and it confirmed that a research career was the right path for him.
⭐ Invited back for a second internship at IISc Bangalore
Step 5 · Near-Miss & Turning Point
Missing the DAAD Scholarship by 0.01% — and Finding Purpose in the Lab
In what remains one of the most heartbreaking moments of his academic journey, Rahul narrowly missed the prestigious DAAD international scholarship by just 0.01%. It was a devastating near-miss after months of preparation and hope. But instead of giving up or pivoting away from research, he channelled that disappointment into joining a research lab at IISER Kolkata. That seemingly quiet decision — to stay and work instead of walk away — turned out to be one of the most pivotal of his entire life. The mentorship he received in that lab, and the passion for discovery that took root there, would shape everything that came next.
Step 6 · Master's Thesis · IISER Kolkata
Completing His Master's Thesis — Graduating 2nd in His Department
Rahul completed his Master's thesis in the same research lab where he had found his calling — and the results spoke for themselves. His thesis was awarded the Second Best Master's Thesis Award by the department, and he graduated second in his entire department. After years of learning without a mentor, of studying in isolation and navigating setbacks alone, this recognition was a powerful confirmation that persistence and self-belief are research skills in their own right.
🥈 2nd Best Master's Thesis Award · Graduated 2nd in Department
Step 7 · International Fellowship · NTU Singapore
NTU–India Connect Fellow — Research Across Borders
In his fourth year, Rahul applied again for international research opportunities and was selected for three different international internships — a remarkable achievement. He chose the NTU–India Connect Fellowship at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. The fellowship stipend was paid only upon completion of the program, and he did not have enough personal funds to support himself at the start. His supervisor stepped in to support him during that financially difficult period, allowing him to continue his research. He completed the fellowship successfully and contributed to published work — another hard-earned step forward that only reinforced his resilience.
🌏 NTU–India Connect Fellow · Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
Step 8 · PhD · Queen's University, Canada
PhD in Chemistry — Pioneering Hydrovoltaic Energy Research
After graduating second in his department, Rahul faced a pivotal choice: take a job in India or continue his research journey internationally. He chose the latter and moved to Canada to pursue a PhD in Chemistry at Queen's University. His doctoral research focused on hydrovoltaics — an emerging technology that generates electricity from the evaporation of water. Because the field was still in its early stages, there were no established playbooks. Rahul had to experiment freely, learn from failures systematically, and push scientific boundaries with limited precedent. His work contributed to one of the highest-power hydrovoltaic devices reported at the time, and he published multiple papers in peer-reviewed journals that advanced the field's understanding. During his PhD, he was also honoured with the DST–INSPIRE Fellowship, the Frank Maine Innovation Fellowship, and the International Award for Academic Excellence.
🏅 DST–INSPIRE Fellow  ·  🏆 Frank Maine Innovation Fellow  ·  📜 International Award for Academic Excellence  ·  📄 Peer-Reviewed Publications
Step 9 · Industry · Development Scientist
From PhD to Industry — Building Real-World Experience
Following his PhD, Rahul worked as a Development Scientist, gaining hands-on experience in materials research, technology development, industry collaboration, client interaction, teamwork, leadership, and laboratory safety. This chapter gave him a full picture of the professional landscape that students so often lack — the gap between what a PhD prepares you for and what industry actually demands. Alongside his research career, he continued teaching and mentoring students in STEM subjects.
Step 10 · Today
Now: Sharing Every Lesson So Others Don't Have to Figure It Out Alone
Looking back, one truth stands out clearly: at no stage of his journey did Rahul have a mentor or guide. Every decision — which exam to take, how to apply for internships, how to write to professors, how to choose between academia and industry — was something he had to figure out through trial, failure, and persistence. That is precisely why he founded CareerClarity. His goal is to make sure the next generation of students does not have to navigate alone. With honest, practical, personalized guidance, he helps students reach their goals faster and with far greater clarity than he ever did.

From HR Leadership to Purpose-Driven Coaching

Career Coach · HR Expert · MBA · Motivational Speaker

Amanda Worden brings more than 18 years of Human Resources expertise across some of Canada's most complex organizations — the Ontario Government, Queen's University, Canadian Red Cross, and the healthcare sector.

A significant head injury and years of rehabilitation became a profound turning point — forcing her to reassess what truly mattered. Through her recovery, she discovered that her greatest fulfillment comes from helping others find clarity, confidence, and direction in their professional lives.

🎓 MBA, Human Resources — AIB 💼 18+ Years HR Leadership 🏛 Ontario Government · Queen's · Red Cross 🗣 John Maxwell Team — Coaching & Public Speaking 🧠 Mental Health First Aid Certified 📋 Workplace Investigation Specialist
Step 1 · Foundation
Building the Academic Foundation in Human Resources
Amanda began her professional journey with a deep investment in education. She completed a Business Administration Advanced Diploma in Human Resources at St. Lawrence College in Kingston, Ontario — building the foundational knowledge in employment law, organizational behaviour, talent management, and HR practice that would serve her across decades of leadership roles. This early commitment to learning set the tone for everything that followed.
Step 2 · Early Career
Entering HR — Learning the Real Complexity of Organizations
Amanda's HR career began in complex, multi-stakeholder environments that few professionals encounter early in their careers. Working across municipal government, healthcare, and the nonprofit sector, she quickly learned that human resources is rarely about policies — it's about people navigating difficult circumstances, competing priorities, and organizational change. This early exposure to complexity gave her an unusually broad and grounded perspective on what it actually takes to succeed in a career.
Step 3 · Leadership Roles
Rising to HR Leadership Across Major Canadian Organizations
Over the next 18+ years, Amanda held HR leadership and practitioner roles at some of Canada's most recognized institutions: Queen's University, the Ontario Government, the Canadian Red Cross, and the healthcare sector. Each role expanded her expertise in talent acquisition, applicant tracking systems, leadership development, executive coaching, workforce planning, and organizational development. She became known as both a strategic HR leader and a deeply empathetic people manager — someone who understood the human side of career journeys as much as the operational side.
🏛 Queen's University · Ontario Government · Canadian Red Cross · Healthcare Sector
Step 4 · The Turning Point
A Head Injury That Changed Everything
Amanda's professional journey took a deeply transformative turn following a significant head injury that required several years of rehabilitation. What began as one of the most difficult periods of her life became a powerful catalyst for reflection, growth, and self-discovery. During her recovery, she was forced to slow down entirely — to step away from the pace and demands of leadership, and to sit with what truly mattered to her both personally and professionally. That extended period of stillness gave her something rare: genuine clarity about purpose. She emerged from it not just recovered, but fundamentally transformed in how she understood herself, her values, and the kind of work she wanted to do.
Step 5 · Rediscovering Purpose
Realizing That Helping Others Find Their Path Was Her Calling
Through her recovery, Amanda came to a powerful realization: the moments in her HR career that had given her the most fulfillment were not the strategic plans or policy frameworks — they were the individual conversations. The one-on-one coaching sessions where someone left with clarity they didn't have before. The interviews where she helped a nervous candidate feel seen and capable. The career transitions she quietly supported from behind the scenes. Her greatest gift, she understood, was helping people discover their potential and build careers that felt not just successful, but genuinely meaningful. She decided to make that the entire focus of her work.
Step 6 · Advanced Education
MBA in Human Resources — Deepening Expertise
Committed to bringing the highest possible level of expertise to her coaching work, Amanda pursued a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a specialization in Human Resources from the Australian Institute of Business. The MBA gave her a rigorous strategic framework to complement her deep practitioner knowledge — allowing her to approach career coaching not just as a human process, but as a structured discipline with measurable outcomes.
🎓 MBA, Human Resources — Australian Institute of Business
Step 7 · Professional Development
Investing in Continuous Growth as a Coach and Leader
Amanda has continuously invested in her own development as a coach, facilitator, and leader. She completed training through the John Maxwell Team in Public Speaking and Coaching, earned a Change Management Certificate through the Canadian Red Cross, attended Tony Robbins' Unleash the Power Within, achieved Mental Health First Aid certification through the Mental Health Commission of Canada, and completed Workplace Investigation certificates through both Hicks Morley and Sherrard Kuzz LLP. Each program has deepened the breadth and quality of support she can offer her clients.
🗣 John Maxwell Team · 💪 Tony Robbins · 🧠 Mental Health First Aid · ⚖️ Workplace Investigations
Step 8 · Today
Now: Empowering Careers With Empathy, Strategy, and Lived Experience
Today, Amanda combines her extensive HR expertise with deep empathy, lived resilience, and a genuine passion for human potential. She works with professionals at every stage — those who feel stuck, those planning major transitions, those aiming for promotion, and those returning after a career pause. Her coaching is not about generic advice; it's about helping each person uncover their unique strengths, align their work with their values, and move forward with confidence and purpose. She believes that with the right guidance and self-awareness, anyone can build a career that is not only successful, but deeply fulfilling.
